However others have mentioned the gamut of apps. I use Pagemaker 3.0 (not upgradable and somewhat damaged since my last hard drive pooped out.) I like PM's create on the fly abilities and some of its other characteristics but to plunk down $500 would be painful. I have Quark 2.11 that I don't have much of a feel for (I don't really like the "text box" concept. The lack of a "command-click" to get through layers is just one of the things that I'll miss. The big thing is that I could upgrade for only $150. At present, I think I would have to mix and match all of the top features of all the competitors to be happy. Why do you like Quark? BTW, all of my documents are quite small. Perhaps you are confusing truetype fonts with bitmaped ones. If you double click on a truetype font you will see three examples of the type, which, indicate it as a truetype font. I don't think the chicago font supplied was a truetype font. But be concerned if it continues to shrink. Video or Power supply problems usually occur if the shrink continues. Sorry to hear it. > According to the book with the 911 utilities, on the older Macs (128 throup the plus), the "OF" is a class code indication a software error. I'm not sure I'm reading the book correctly, but if I am the "0003" is an Illegal instruction probably caused by random code. The latter indicates the software started to execute meaningless instructions. Often this occurs because a bug corrupted some part of the Mac's memory. One problem I had was that it appeared After Dark was screwing things up and I wanted to go back to a small, simple screensaver. I rememed and early one you renamed Macsbug, I suppose so it would load first. I installed it. The next time I tried to boot I goot big time problems. It took me too long to figure out that that little, simple screen blanker was the problem. Now things are back to about normal. But, MacTools Deluxe tells me my catalog file is bad. Try using a great little utility called minor repairs. The article makes it sound as if the gateway can act as a link between SS users and QM gateways to other services such as Applelink, CIS, GEnie, Connect, UUNet, among other features. Would this be of interest to the group as part of the goal of continued efficiency in communications and options ? At work our SEs and Pluses are using the program that used the Macsbug hook. All our other computers are using AutoIdle which works ina similar way but flashes a bouncing icon of the current application on the darkened screen. AutoIdle seems to work fine on II's and IIcx's. I'll be finding out how it does on SI's very soon. In adding 4 - 1 MB simms in a Mac II series machine to the existing 1 MB of 256K simms, we've gotten interesting tones when we turn the computer on. What is this a symptom of: bad simms, incompatible simms, or what ? . We're attempting to take the 4 - 1 MB simms add them to the existing RAM to make 5 MB machines. The new simms are 80 ns. The 256K simms are stock Apple that came with the system units. . Are my suspicions that the old and new simms are different speeds and we can't combine different speed simms the nature of the problem ? After using Quark for a little while you find very little to miss in PM. The infinite more control of Quark and the many more things you can do with it will soon dispell all need for PMS. The eight SIMM connectors are divided into two banks of four SIMM slots, Bank A and Bank B. On the Macintosh II and IIx, Bank A is the bank closest to the edge of the board, while on the Macintosh IIcx, Bank A is the bank closest to the disk drives and power supply. Unlike the Macintosh Plus and the Macintosh SE, these machines have no resistors to cut and no jumpers to set; you need only install the SIMMS in the correct banks and youll be up and running. You can implement the following configurations: 1MB, using four 256 Kbit SIMMs in Bank A 2MB, using eight 256 Kbit SIMMs in Banks A and B 4MB, using four 1 Mbit SIMMs in Bank A 5MB, using four 1 Mbit SIMMs in Bank A and four 256 Kbit SIMMs in Bank B 8MB, using eight 1 Mbit SIMMs in Banks A and B Again, it is important to make sure the right size SIMMs are in the right Bank; when you are using a combination of SIMMs, the larger SIMMs (in terms of Mbits) must be in Bank A. When you are using only four SIMMs, they must be in Bank A as well. Above is Tech note 176 from the MacTechnotes file section. Illustrations are also available. Usually the sounds you hear are from placing the simms in the wrong slot or some other startup error which may have occurred. Bank A is next to the power switch. The minimum speed for the IIci and fx is 80ns. The rest will work with 120ns or faster. You can mix speeds between banks but it's not recommended within a bank. If you are still getting tones, you probably have a bad Simm. I tried opening my system suitcase, and a window appeared containing several TrueType and fixed-sized fonts that were loaded off my System 7 disks. Now, from what I understand, a TrueType font has the advantage of being scalable and can be used for both displaying and printing. So, why does my system suitcase contain a Courier file (scalable), and also Courier 9, 10, 12, ... files (fixed-sized)?? I was expecting to see only 1 TrueType, scalable font file." You got the idea right about True Type. My own explanation of the existance of those 'other' fonts (eg. Courier 9,10 etc) if that they are for Finder's use. You see, it's much faster to use bit mapped fonts that True Type as True Type needs to be literally calculated and drawn. Try this: remove all those bit mapped fonts, leaving only a couple of True Type Fonts. Next make sure that you're viewing with a True Type Font (under one of the DAs). Go back to Finder. We'll be trying some solutions today. ,. the RAM simms seem to be fine. The 256K simms work fine on their own, as do the 1 MB simms. But combined together we have the problem. As you suggest, the problem most likely lies in which bank the simms go into.
